Emotional ESG

A human-centred approach to the social dimension of sustainability.

Emotional ESG is a human-centred approach developed through the RE:GEN Community Initiative in Malaysia. It explores how emotional awareness, connection, participation and community action can strengthen the social dimension of ESG.

WHY EMOTIONAL ESG MATTERS

Why Emotional ESG Matters

Traditional ESG discussions often focus on systems, reporting, governance, carbon, compliance and measurable outputs. These are important, but the social dimension also depends on how people experience change, whether they feel connected, and whether they are willing to keep participating after a programme ends.

Emotional ESG does not replace established ESG frameworks. It adds a practical human lens by asking how awareness, trust, belonging and participation can support stronger community outcomes.

“Impact is not only what we build. It is also how people connect, participate and continue contributing.”

THE HUMAN JOURNEY

Four Elements of Emotional ESG

01 · AWARENESS

Notice What People Carry

Create space for people to recognise emotional pressure, lived experience and what may need attention.

02 · CONNECTION

Build Trust and Belonging

Encourage empathy, non-judgmental interaction and meaningful connection between people and communities.

03 · PARTICIPATION

Turn Reflection into Action

Help people move from awareness into learning, volunteering, contribution and community participation.

04 · REGENERATION

Create Something Together

Connect people with real-world community and nature-based action that can continue over time.

APPLIED THROUGH RE:GEN

From Emotional Awareness to Community Action

RE:GEN applies Emotional ESG through three connected engines. The Urban Emotional Experience creates an accessible entry point for reflection. The AI Community System continues engagement through digital participation, learning, volunteering and Time Bank activities. Community Regeneration then creates opportunities for people to reconnect with plants, soil, food-growing and shared community spaces.

Together, these layers create a pathway from feeling to connection, from connection to participation, and from participation to regeneration.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR

Making the Social Dimension More Visible

Emotional ESG encourages programmes to look beyond attendance alone. Depending on the activity, RE:GEN can observe participation, reflection, dwell time, return engagement, volunteering, learning and follow-up community action. These indicators do not claim to measure clinical mental health. They help partners understand whether a programme is creating meaningful participation and continuity.

This creates a stronger bridge between human experience and ESG-aligned social impact reporting while keeping the focus on real people and real community participation.
